Drops Science Garden
Project Insight: Santa Cruz, CA
Santa Cruz City Schools received a grant from the State Water Resource Control Board to implement Low Impact Design Systems (LIDs) and water conservation strategies at Bay View Elementary School.
MADI’s design team worked with UCSC students and the School District staff to develop an appropriate layout which included all the elements described in the grant agreement made with the State. The new design included rainwater catchment tanks, raingardens, parking lot bioswales, and new permeable playground surfacing.
Bay View Elementary School now has a design that will positively impact the community and the environment. The LIDs included rainwater tanks, capturing rainwater from school’s rooftops to use in their life lab as well as in their new bioswales and raingardens. Together this design improves stormwater quality, mitigates pollutants, and conserves water.
